It had been a bad news week for Google, with a big ruling on book search that might cost them hundreds of millions of dollars, the world's biggest mobile phone manufacturer Nokia closing down rumours of using Google's Android on its new phones and, perhaps worst of all for the insanely wealthy multinational corporation, our own Rhodri Marsden questioning the viability of YouTube, as if the prestige of having 20 hours of nutty cats and Mentos and coke explosions uploaded every minute wouldn't be enough to keep any business afloat.

I remember how chuffed I was when I discovered I could use my Panasonic music centre to tape my mates' vinyl record collections. On just two C120s I recorded the Hawkwind back catalogue and still had space to tack on the best of X-ray Spex (1979 was a musically-confusing year). The music centre was the first mass-produced legal downloader and millions of us created vast vaults of tapes of our favourite bands. I don't remember any heavies from the record industry turning up on my doorstep to threaten me with prosecution for illegal taping. And I don't recall any sanctimonious hectoring about stealing from the mouths of starving artists. They don't make music centres any more. But they do send the men in black round if you try to avoid paying for your albums.

Without this crumb of comfort, we'd be plunged into chaos; gardening in particular would become incredibly onerous. But in the brave new world of cloud computing, big business is tasked with looking after our emails, our diaries, our photos and our blogs. We divest ourselves of responsibility, and assume that everything will remain where we left it. Most of the time this arrangement works fine, but when it doesn't, and our data vanishes, we become indignant, stressed, and in many cases utterly powerless to do anything about it.
