Hoards of men, women and children cheered, waved flags and sang as the team danced and shook their Champions League and FA Cup trophies in the air from the upper decks of two open-top buses. When the players were given a microphone and asked to say a few words, Terry led chants of "Champione, champione, ole, ole, ole". Keen to get as close as possible to their heroes, young men climbed onto the roofs of bus stops to shake hands with the team who leaned over from their double-decked chariots, emblazoned in blue and white with the words "Champions of Europe 11/12" on the front. The Blues were named European club champions for the first time in their history after a nail-biting penalty shoot-out against Bayern Munich in Germany, watched by some 25,000 visiting fans at the Allianz Arena. Even David Cameron managed to catch the shoot-out, watching the drama unfold alongside German chancellor Angela Merkel at the G8 summit at Camp David. The team's last victory parade saw around 70,000 excited fans flock to the streets to celebrate the club's 2010 Premier League and FA Cup double. Sunday's celebration followed the same route, travelling along streets including Fulham Road and King's Road before ending in Parsons Green.</media:text>

Earthquake kills at least three in northern Italy

At least three people have been killed after an earthquake struck northern Italy, forcing thousands of people to flee onto the streets.

Related Stories

Powerful earthquake hits northern Italy

Earthquake kills at least three in northern Italy

Japan tsunami victim's soccer ball turns up in Alaska

<media:category>Headlines</media:category><media:keywords>Estense Castle, San Felice Sul Panaro, earthquake, Bologna, Modena, Ferrara, Rovigo, Verona, Mantua</media:keywords><media:text>At least three people have been killed after an earthquake struck northern Italy, collapsing historic buildings and forcing thousands of people to flee into the streets. The 6.0-magnitude quake, which struck just after 4am local time, destroyed old factories and local bell towers in a number of picturesque towns including Bologna, Modena, Ferrara, Rovigo, Verona and Mantua. It was the strongest tremor to hit Italy for three years. Rescue officials were checking reports that other people were buried under rubble. There was serious damage to historic buildings such as the 14th century Estense Castle in the town of San Felice Sul Panaro, near the epicentre. There were fears that one of the towers of the famous mediaeval castle, the town's biggest attraction, could collapse. The town's main church was also severely damaged. The last major earthquake to hit Italy was a 6.3 magnitude quake in the central Italian city of L'Aquila in 2009, which killed nearly 300 people.</media:text><media:thumbnail Gibb's family announced his death in a statement, saying: "The family of Robin Gibb, of the Bee Gees, announce with great sadness that Robin passed away following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery. The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time." The announcement prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans and members of the entertainment and music industry, including rock star Bryan Adams and singer songwriter Mick Hucknall. The singer, who made up one third of disco legends the Bee Gees, with his brothers Barry and Maurice, had been battling colon and liver cancer for 18 months. Despite brief improvements in his health in recent months, he passed away on Sunday evening. The musician fell into a coma in April after contracting pneumonia but his family later said he had "beaten the odds" just days after doctors said he "was in God's hands" and had a 10 per cent chance of survival. His twin brother Maurice died of a heart attack in 2003 following intestinal surgery, while his younger brother Andy, who was not part of the Bee Gees but a successful singer in his own right, died in 1988 from heart failure at 30.</media:text>

Cameron: The Prime Minister joined other Nato leaders in Chicago to express his confidence in the ability of the country's local security forces to stifle any attempt by terrorist groups to re-establish footing in the region once the international armies leave. He said that "one way or the other" the majority of British troops would be coming home as the Afghans took on responsibility for their own security. "We have to remember why we're in Afghanistan. We're there to stop it becoming a haven for terrorist training camps," he said. "I'm very confident that one way or the other our troops will come home and Afghanistan will be looked after by Afghan security forces who will be capable of maintaining security in their country and, crucially for us, stopping it from being a terrorist training haven that can affect us at home in terms of terrorist attacks."</media:text>

Ryanair reports record profits

Ryanair has recorded record profits thanks to recent ticket-price hikes to offset steep rises in fuel costs.

Related Stories

Ryanair reports record profits

Virgin to allow phone calls in flight

Related Stories

Cameron defends free parenting classes

Al-Megrahi: A Lockerbie scapegoat?

<media:category>Headlines</media:category><media:keywords>Ryanair, budget airling, fuel price rise, airplane</media:keywords><media:text>Ryanair has recorded record profits thanks to recent ticket-price hikes to offset steep rises in fuel costs. The budget carrier posted a jump in net profits by 25 per cent in the first quarter of 2012 to 503 million euros. The boost was largely down to 16 per cent fare rises which have offset a 30 per cent incline in fuel costs. It said traffic grew by five per cent and revenue by 19 per cent to 4.3 billion. But it warned worsening economic conditions in Europe and stubbornly high fuel costs would cut its profit to between 400 million and 440 million euros in the 2013, making it the first year since 2009 that profit has fallen. "Recession, austerity, currency concerns and lower fares at new and growing bases ... will make it difficult to repeat this year's record results," CEO Michael O'Leary said in a statement.</media:text>

New Falklands War memorial is unveiled

A memorial for the 255 British soldiers who died during the Falklands War has been unveiled.

Related Stories

New Falklands War memorial is unveiled

Condemnation of Argentina Falklands Olympic ad

We Will Rock You celebrates ten year anniversary

Chris Tarrant talks Pudsey at We Will Rock You anniversary

Ewan McGregor and other artists record Toast To Freedom

Ewan McGregor and other artists record Toast To Freedom

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon say 'I do' again

The Queen watches sheep shearing

Shearing sheep for the Queen

The Queen meets the Welsh rugby team

Aged-enhanced images of Madeleine McCann released

<media:category>Headlines</media:category><media:keywords>Great War memorial, Port Stanley, Falkland Islands, anniversary, Argentina, Martin Withers, Buenos Aires</media:keywords><media:text>A memorial for the 255 British soldiers who died during the Falklands War has been unveiled on the islands. Over 600 veterans attended the special ceremony at the National Memorial Arboretum to mark the conflict's 30th anniversary. The service ended with a flypast of the UK's last airworthy Vulcan, piloted by Flight Lieutenant Martin Withers DFC who led the famous Black Buck 1 air raid on Port Stanley's runway. Incorporating a seven foot high curved wall of rugged Cotswold stone facing a rock from the Falklands, the memorial has been built to reflect the Falklands' landscape and echoes the commemorative wall in San Carlos cemetery. The service included a pipe lament; a solo sung by the daughter of a major who died; a reading by a Falklands widow and a march off of standards. The memorial has been unveiled amid simmering tensions between Britain and Argentina over the islands. Earlier this month, an advert in which an athlete trains for the Olympics "on Argentinian soil", running across the The Great War Memorial in Port Stanley, was broadcast on local television. It came after Buenos Aires accused Britain of militarising the South Atlantic by deploying a new Royal Navy warship in the area.</media:text>

Man convicted of Lockerbie bombing dies

Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, the Libyan intelligence officer convicted for the Lockerbie bombing has died.

Related Stories

Al-Megrahi's death divides Lockerbie victims' families

Man convicted of Lockerbie bombing dies

David Cameron rules out fresh inquiry into Lockerbie attack

Al-Megrahi: Three years of suffering in freedom

Al-Megrahi: A Lockerbie scapegoat?

Related Stories

Al-Megrahi's death divides Lockerbie victims' families

Al-Megrahi: A Lockerbie scapegoat?

David Cameron rules out fresh inquiry into Lockerbie attack

<media:category>Headlines</media:category><media:keywords>Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, Libya, Lockerbie</media:keywords><media:text>Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, the Libyan intelligence officer convicted for the Lockerbie bombing has died. The 59-year-old was sentenced to life in prison for the 1988 bombing of a US airliner which killed 270 people when it was blown out of the sky over the Scottish town. He died at home in the Libyan capital of Tripoli after a long battle with cancer, his brother Abdulhakim said on Sunday. East Renfrewshire Council said it was also looking into the claims, a spokesman said. Al-Megrahi was the only person convicted of the atrocity on Pan Am Flight 103 from London to New York, four days before Christmas. All 259 passengers on board died while 11 Lockerbie residents were slain when the airliner came down on their homes. He was controversially released from prison in 2009 on compassionate grounds and received in his home country with rapturous celebration.</media:text>

David Cameron rules out fresh inquiry into Lockerbie attack

Prime Minister David Cameron has dismissed calls for a fresh inquiry into the conviction of Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi.

Related Stories

David Cameron rules out fresh inquiry into Lockerbie attack

Al-Megrahi: Three years of suffering in freedom

Al-Megrahi's death divides Lockerbie victims' families

Man convicted of Lockerbie bombing dies

Al-Megrahi: A Lockerbie scapegoat?

Related Stories

Man convicted of Lockerbie bombing dies

Al-Megrahi's death divides Lockerbie victims' families

Al-Megrahi: A Lockerbie scapegoat?

<media:category>Headlines</media:category><media:keywords>Prime Minister David Cameron, Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi, Lockerbie, Menzies Campbell, Libya</media:keywords><media:text>Prime Minister David Cameron has dismissed calls for a fresh inquiry into the conviction of Abdelbaset al-Megrahi for the Lockerbie bombing. The former Libyan intelligence official was sentenced to life in prison for the 1988 bombing of a US airliner over the Scottish town which claimed 270 lives. However there have been growing calls for a probe into his conviction amid speculation over a cover up and claims that his prosecution was based on weak evidence. "This has been thoroughly gone through," said Mr Cameron. "There was a proper process, a proper court proceeding and all the rest of it. "I'm very clear that the court case was properly done and properly dealt with." Mr Cameron also said the day of al-Megrahi's death should be a day to remember the victims of the attack. "I've always been clear he should never have been released from prison," he said. "Today is a day to remember the 270 people who lost their lives in what was an appalling terrorist act. "Our thoughts should be with them and their families for the suffering they've had." Former Liberal Democrat leader and Scottish QC Sir Menzies Campbell added: "This brings to a satisfactory end a controversial series of events which began with the terrible and tragic loss of life over Lockerbie. "The decision to release Mr Megrahi was ill-judged and undermined confidence in the Scottish legal system. "Answers to many of the outstanding questions have died with Mr Megrahi."</media:text><media:thumbnail url="http://feeds.itn.co.uk/itnwebsite/story45791_120520cameron20_1_320x240.jpg" width="320" Some relatives in Britain, who believe the former Libyan intelligence officer was innocent of the 1988 atrocity, hailed him as the 271st victim of the bombing while an American victim's mother said she hoped he died "a painful, horrible death". David Ben-Ayreah, a spokesman for UK relatives, said Megrahi's death was to be "deeply regretted", adding: "As someone who attended the trial, I have never taken the view that Megrahi was guilty. Megrahi is the 271st victim of Lockerbie." Jim Swire, whose daughter Flora was killed in the bombing, said the reported death was a "very sad event", adding that there is evidence yet to be released that will prove Megrahi's innocence. "It's a very sad event," he said. "I met him last time face-to-face in Tripoli in December last year, when he was very sick and in a lot of pain. "Right up to the end he was determined - for his family's sake, he knew it was too late for him, but for his family's sake - how the verdict against him should be overturned. "And also he wanted that for the sake of those relatives who had come to the conclusion after studying the evidence that he wasn't guilty, and I think that's going to happen." However, Susan Cohen, whose daughter Theodora, 20, died on the plane, said she believed Megrahi should have received the death penalty. She said: "He died with his family around him. My daughter died a horrible death when she was 20 years old with her full life ahead of her. You call that justice? "I feel no pity for Megrahi, I believe he should have died a lot sooner. He should have been tried in the States and given the death penalty. Watching him be released from prison was very painful for me."</media:text><media:thumbnail url="http://feeds.itn.co.uk/itnwebsite/story45785_120520megrahiREAX20_1_320x240.jpg" width="320" Cadman, David Cameron, Kenny MacAskill, Hillary Clinton, murder, trial</media:keywords><media:text>Abdelbaset al-Megrahi was the only person to be convicted over the Lockerbie bombing despite claims he could not have worked alone and lingering suspicions that he was innocent. He was put on trial in 2001 after sustained international pressure in what became one of the most complex trials ever staged. It lasted seven months and heard 84-days of testimony from 230 witnesses at a cost of £75 million. He was finally found guilty of mass murder and jailed for a minimum of 27 years. However, he was freed from prison on compassionate grounds in 2009 after serving nearly eight years of his sentence, claiming that cancer had left him with three months to live. Scottish Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill's decision to allow Megrahi to return home to die in Libya sparked international condemnation from some relatives of victims and politicians, who demanded he be sent back to jail. The strongest reaction to his release came from America where US secretary of state Hillary Clinton branded the decision "absolutely wrong". He received a hero's welcome upon his return to Libya. David Cameron also came under pressure from the US to launch a full inquiry into his release. But while many of the relatives are convinced of his guilt, there are some, particularly in Britain, who believe he is innocent and point towards a cover up. Martin Cadman, from Norfolk, whose son Bill died in the flight at the age of 32, said: "The only thing I am interested in is getting to the truth. The Americans know far more than they have said." Al-Megrahi has always denied responsibility for the bombing and continually appealed his conviction. He said in a book that Mr MacAskill urged him to drop his latest appeal to smooth the way for his compassionate release, a claim the Scottish Justice Secretary has strongly denied.</media:text>

Pakistan blocks Twitter over "blasphemous" material

Pakistan has blocked Twitter blaming "blasphemous" material posted by users, according to a senior government official.

Related Stories

Pakistan blocks Twitter over "blasphemous" material

Dannii Minogue will not return to X Factor

J-Lo denies American Idol exit rumours

Joey Barton tweets whilst awaiting match ban decision

Pakistan market bomb kills 20

Central Line tube passenger admits racist abuse

Organist Graham Blackledge on his BGT 'miracle'

Organist Graham Blackledge on his BGT miracle

BGT organist's mad interview!

Tributes pour in for aid worker found dead in Pakistan

British Red Cross worker beheaded in Pakistan

Related Stories

Facebook shares go on sale

Facebook: The marred rise of social networking supremacy

<media:category>Headlines</media:category><media:keywords>Pakistan, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, Mohammed Yaseen</media:keywords><media:text>Pakistan has blocked Twitter blaming "blasphemous" material posted by users, according to a senior government official. Mohammed Yaseen, chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, did not reveal which users had prompted the ban or what was posted but said restrictions would be only be lifted once ongoing discussions between the Pakistani government and Twitter are resolved. "This has been done under the directions of the Ministry of Information Technology. It's because of blasphemous content," he said. "They (the ministry) have been discussing with them (Twitter) for some time now, requesting them to remove some particular content," he said. The Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan said its members have been asked to block Twitter indefinitely, but no reason has been provided by the government. shadow chancellor, prime minister</media:keywords><media:text>Shadow chancellor Ed Balls has slammed David Cameron for "failing" to pull his weight in Europe as he warned leaders not to let Greece fall out of the European single currency or face economic "catastrophe". The Labour MP suggested Mr Cameron was not working hard enough amid reports over the Prime Minister's methods of "chillaxing" by playing tennis and games on his iPad. "I don't want to be too pompous about this," Mr Balls said. "It is a good thing at the weekend to have a bit of time." "[But] I often feel in the house of Commons he is not on top of the issues." He also said the eurozone had to make "tough decisions to get its house in order but not so much that it chokes off growth", pointing out that Germany and the UK's stance conflicts with that of France and the US. "Someone's got to persuade Germany that [Greece leaving the eurozone] will be a catastrophe for the world," he said. "In these circumstances if Greece does try to leave the eurozone in a disorderly way it would cause huge damage to the world economy, to the British economy, to the eurozone economy, as the eurozone has not sorted out how to stop this crisis spreading to Spain and Italy and those are much larger countries." "Greece needs to stay in for at least as long as the eurozone needs to sort its act out. And I am afraid that is taking a very, very long time," he added. "David Cameron has been saying, we are told, for the last nine months to Germany that the European central bank must do its job, put the firewall in place, stop the contagion. "In that he has failed because they have not listened to him."</media:text><media:thumbnail url="http://feeds.itn.co.uk/itnwebsite/story45776_120520balls20_1_320x240.jpg" width="320" height="240" The movie is a graphic story of crime and its consequences, revolving around a series of events that interweave between the characters and their narrative. Plan, also known as Ben Drew, says he wanted to make an important film: "My music is always coming from a place, and this film came from a place where I want to talk about these issues because I feel that, no matter how negative they are, if we address them, talk about them, we can somehow learn from them. "I don't think the film offers up a solution on how to deal with it but I definitely think it brings awareness to the subject matter." The title is the same as a record Drew released in March 2012, a song which deals with the 2011 London riots. ILL Manors is released in the UK on June 6.</media:text><media:thumbnail url="http://feeds.itn.co.uk/itnwebsite/story45779_120520planB20_1_320x240.jpg" width="320" height="240" Forensic detectives were combing the scene for clues at Bidston Hill observatory near Birkenhead, Merseyside, after a concerned member of the public raised the alarm at about 5.30pm on Saturday. An 18-year-old man from Moreton, Wirral, has been arrested on suspicion of murder. The victim is believed to be in her late teens, although she is yet to be officially identified. The observatory, a Grade II listed building, is not in use at present. A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said: "Crime scene investigators are in attendance at the scene and officers are appealing to anyone who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously on Bidston Hill over the last few days to come forward. "The 18-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder has been taken to a police station where he will be interviewed by detectives."</media:text>

Guatemala's Fuego volcano erupts

Guatemala's Fuego volcano has begun belching lava and ash thousands of feet into the sky.

Related Stories

Guatemala's Fuego volcano erupts

Spectacular eruption of Guatemala's Fuego volcano

Mexico volcano spews ash and smoke

Daredevils speed flying down Mt Etna

Daredevils speed fly down Mt Etna

<media:category>Headlines</media:category><media:keywords>Guatemala, Fuego, volcano, eruption, ash, lava, rock.</media:keywords><media:text>Guatemala's Fuego volcano has begun belching lava and ash thousands of feet into the sky. On Saturday, the government issued an airplane advisory and closed sections of highway as the volcano, around 25 miles from the capital, began spewing a column of ash up to 16,400 feet above the crater. Guatemala's national emergency commission issued an advisory warning planes not to fly within a 25-mile radius of the mountain, although La Aurora international airport in Guatemala City remained open. Local Santiago Mis told reporters the recent eruption was the worst he had seen in years: "Now it is very strong, it hasn't erupted in six or seven years where it spewed some lava but not a lot like today." He added: "We don't know whether to leave or not. We will see how it goes tonight." In 2010, an explosion at the Pacaya volcano a similar distance from Guatemala City coated the capital in a thick layer of black ash and rock, forcing hundreds of families to evacuate.</media:text>

Mark Zuckerberg marries

Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg has married his long-term girlfriend Priscilla Chan.

Related Stories

Mark Zuckerberg marries

Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg marries

Underwater weddings in China

Mariah Carey hints at new material

Mariah Carey hints at new material

Mariah Carey hints at new material

Dogs get married in Peru

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon say 'I do' again

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon say 'I do' again

<media:category>Headlines</media:category><media:keywords>Mark Zuckerberg, Faceboook, Priscilla, Chan, marriage, wedding</media:keywords><media:text>Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg has married his long-term girlfriend Priscilla Chan, just days after he took his company public in one of the most anticipated stock offerings in Wall Street history. Zuckerberg and 27-year-old Chan tied the knot at a small ceremony attended by less than 100 people at his home in Palo Alto, California, according to a guest who had been given permission to speak to the press. Most believed they were simply attending Chan's graduation party. She graduated from the University of California medical school in San Francisco on Monday, the same day Zuckerberg turned 28. The couple met at Harvard and have been together for more than nine years. The wedding snaps, and an announcement, were unsurprisingly posted on Facebook.</media:text><media:thumbnail url="http://feeds.itn.co.uk/itnwebsite/story45765_120520zuckerberg20_1_320x240.jpg" payments and computer hacking will retire this year, the Metropolitan Police has announced. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Sue Akers will retire following the Olympics, after 36 years in the service. She is believed to be the longest-serving woman in the Met. As well as the probe into illegal newsgathering, she has been leading the Met's inquiry into the potential involvement of intelligence services in relation to detainees held abroad. She took control of Operation Weeting, into phone hacking, in January 2011. As the investigation broadened, she also took charge of Operations Elveden and Tuleta, the probes into illegal payments and computer hacking. Deputy Commissioner Craig Mackey said that Ms Akers' extensive detective experience would be missed, but her decision to step down would not be allowed to impact on the progress of the investigations. Mr Mackey said: "Considerable resources have been dedicated to investigating phone-hacking and related offences and the officers on these operations will continue to follow all evidence of suspected criminality." Ms Akers, the former Borough Commander of Barnet, was awarded the Queens Police Medal for services to policing in 2007.</media:text><media:thumbnail Hoardes are expected to turn out to celebrate the club's historic Champions League and FA Cup double, following their penalties win over Bayern Munich on Saturday. The Blues were named European club champions for the first time in their history after a nail-biting penalty shoot-out in Germany, watched by some 25,000 visiting fans at the Allianz Arena. Even David Cameron managed to catch the shoot-out, watching the drama unfold alongside German chancellor Angela Merkel at the G8 summit at Camp David. The procession will kick off from Stamford Bridge at 4pm when manager Roberto Di Matteo, captain John Terry and the rest of the double-winning squad will display their newly-won silverware. The team's last victory parade saw around 70,000 excited fans flock to the streets to celebrate the club's 2010 Premier League and FA Cup double. Sunday's celebration will follow the same route, travelling along streets including Fulham Road and King's Road before ending in Parsons Green. Local roads will be restricted and some closed to traffic until the crowds disperse.</media:text><media:thumbnail url="http://feeds.itn.co.uk/itnwebsite/story45763_120520chelsea20_1_320x240.jpg"
