He had been holding talks with the FA to try and draw a line under comments he made about John Terry's involvement as a player for the national team The discussions had been taking place between Capello, FA chairman David Bernstein and general secretary Alex Horne. It wasn't expected the Italian would hand in his resignation. An FA statement read: "The discussions focused on the FA board's decision to remove the England team captaincy from John Terry, and Fabio Capello's response through an Italian broadcast interview. The search for a new manager is now under way as Capello leaves the job with immediate effect. The odds on Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp becoming the next boss have shortened after his acquittal for tax fraud. David Bernstein and the Club England management team are due to hold a press conference on Thursday lunchtime to talk about the latest development. It means that Capello will never lead England into a major tournament again, leaving before the opportunity to manage the team at the Euro 2012 Championships in Poland and Ukraine.</media:text>

Rare Martian meteorite being examined

A rare Martian meteorite is being researched by scientists so more can be learnt about the Red Planet.

Related Stories

Amazing pictures of rare Martian meteorite

Related Stories

Beckham shown red card at kids football match

<media:category>UK</media:category><media:keywords>Mars, martian meteorite, planets, solar system, galaxy, stars, scientists, Natural History Museum.</media:keywords><media:text>A rare Martian meteorite is being researched by scientists so more can be learnt about the Red Planet. The video was captured by teaching assistant Coryn Memory, who apparently saw the animal as many as five times before managing to capture it on film. Far from the usual conspiracy theory or hoax, this footage has been investigated by Big Cat expert Frank Tunbridge, who, by superimposing images over the footage, managed to estimate the cat at 6ft long from tip to tail. In one scene, the cat appears to be the same size as a passing fox, despite the fox being considerably closer to the camera. The footage is far from conclusive proof that Big Cats are thriving in the British countryside, but it does add weight to the argument in favour.</media:text>

Harry Redknapp's conversation with NOTW reporter Rob Beasley

Following Harry Redknapp's acquittal over tax evasion charges, the conversation between the Spurs boss and a reporter has been released.

Related Stories

Harry Redknapp's conversation with NOTW reporter Rob Beasley

Steve Coogan settles NOTW hacking claim

Related Stories

Huhne decision expected

Redknapp jurors consider verdicts

Harry Redknapp cleared of tax evasion

Mandaric acquitted over tax charges

<media:category>UK</media:category><media:keywords>rob beasley, harry redknapp, milan mandaric, notw, news of the world, charges, taxes, off-shore, peter crouch, money.</media:keywords><media:text>Following Harry Redknapp's acquittal for taking bungs in an offshore tax dodge, the taped conversation between the Spurs boss and a News of the World reporter has been released. "Was it your cut on player sales?," NOTW sports reporter Rob Beasley is heard asking Redknapp. "It was a cut on a player sale," Redknapp responds. RB: "Peter Crouch?" HR: "On Peter Crouch! Five per cent of Peter Crouch." Redknapp's defence claimed the information he gave NOTW sports reporter Rob Beasley about why over £90,000 was paid into his Monaco bank account was in fact false and the money had nothing to do with his employment. But prosecutor John Black QC urged the jury in a closing speech to conclude the sum was in fact a bonus paid to Redknapp arising from Portsmouth's profits on the sale of the striker to Aston Villa. Redknapp told the court on Tuesday: "I don't have to tell Mr Beasley the truth. I have to tell police the truth, not Mr Beasley, he's a News of the World reporter."</media:text><media:thumbnail url="http://feeds.itn.co.uk/itnwebsite/story38628_120208redknapphone08_1_320x240.jpg" The court heard that Mr Coogan had settled his claim for £40,000, while ex-footballer Paul Gascoigne received £68,000 and Liberal Democrat deputy leader Simon Hughes £45,000. The announcement came during the latest in a number of pre-trial reviews in preparation for a long-awaited trial due to start next week. Hugh Tomlinson QC, who represents some of the claimants, said nine out of ten outstanding claims had been settled with News of the World publisher News Group Newspapers (NGN), with singer Charlotte Church having not yet reached an agreement. Ipsa also recommended a 1.85 per cent increase in MPs' pension contributions. "We have been given responsibility for reviewing and, as necessary, reforming MPs' pay and pensions," said Ipsa chairman Sir Ian Kennedy. "We are exploring the broader question of how to reform MPs' remuneration to make it fair to MPs and taxpayers alike and, crucially, how to make it sustainable. "In the meantime, we must be mindful of the conditions in the rest of the public sector where pay has remained static and where settlements will see most people pay more into their pensions too. He added: "While we address the longer-term changes which are needed, I believe it is right that we act in the interim so that MPs' circumstances more closely reflect those experienced by others."</media:text>

Airport tweet 'made law look silly'

A man found guilty of sending a "menacing tweet" was the victim of a legal "steamroller", the High Court has heard.

Related Stories

Mark Hughes unveiled as QPR manager

Hughes at QPR 'for the long term'

Barton deemed no threat to Terry trial

Kylie calls in police over cyber stalker

<media:category>UK</media:category><media:keywords>twitter joke trial, Paul Chambers, robin hood airport, tweet, convicted, terrorism, comedians, twitter, charlie brooker, stephen fry</media:keywords><media:text>A man found guilty of sending a "menacing tweet" was the victim of a legal "steamroller" that threatened to make the law look "silly", it has been argued at the High Court. Paul Chambers, 27, insists he thought that no-one would ever have taken seriously his joking threat to blow an airport "sky high". He said he wrote the tweet in a moment of frustration after Robin Hood Airport in South Yorkshire was closed by snow in January 2010, but was later convicted at Doncaster Magistrates' Court, fined £385 and ordered to pay £600 costs. Crown Court Judge Jacqueline Davies, sitting with two magistrates, said the electronic communication was "clearly menacing" and that airport staff were sufficiently concerned to report it. She added: "We find it impossible to accept that anyone living in this country, in the current climate of terrorist threats, would not be aware of the consequences of their actions in making such a statement." However at London's High Court on Wednesday, Ben Emmerson QC, appearing for Chambers, argued the Crown Court had erred in law and in common sense, asking the for the initial decision to be overturned. Following the not guilty verdicts, Redknapp immediately left the court, while Mandaric walked up to Detective Inspector Dave Manley to shake his hand and say "Thank you". Speaking outside court Mr Mandaric said the prosecution had been a "horrible dream" but said he had always believed in British justice. It can also be revealed that the former Portsmouth chairman was tried and acquitted of another tax fiddling charge at the club. Mandaric and ex-chief executive Peter Storrie were both cleared by a jury after being accused of a £600,000 tax dodge over player transfer payments. Mr Storrie applied in November to have a reporting ban lifted, saying it was having a "devastating" impact on his personal life, but a judge ruled against his application pending the conclusion of Mandaric's trial alongside Harry Redknapp.</media:text>

Harry Redknapp cleared of tax evasion

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has been cleared of dodging tax on the deposit in his Monaco account, Rosie 47.

Related Stories

Redknapp jurors consider verdicts

Sir Alex Ferguson on John Terry and Rio Ferdinand

Related Stories

Next England captain 'up in the air'

Redknapp jurors consider verdicts

Mandaric acquitted over tax charges

Harry Redknapp's conversation with NOTW reporter Rob Beasley

Capello quits England

<media:category>UK</media:category><media:keywords>Harry Redknapp, Spurs boss, manager, England, tax dodging, tax evasion, Monaco, Rosie 47, Milan Mandaric, not guilty, cleared, jury, Portsmouth chief executive, Peter Storrie</media:keywords><media:text>Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has been cleared of dodging tax on the deposit in his Monaco account, Rosie 47. Jurors accepted Redknapp's angry denials that he avoided tax on any payments over £189,000 found in the account. Milan Mandaric and former Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storrie were also cleared of £600,000 tax dodge claims at a previous trial, it can be reported for the first time. Mandaric and Redknapp embraced in the dock as the verdicts were read out on Wednesday, after five hours of deliberations, with the football manager immediately leaving the court. Judge Anthony Leonard made no comment other than to discharge the jury. The Tottenham Hotspur manager's hopes of leading the England team received a major boost as he walked free from court. Speaking to reporters following the verdict, Harry Redknapp said he had been through a five year long "nightmare", adding that the case "should never have come to court". His acquittal marks a disastrous end of a five-year £8 million inquiry into football corruption by tax authorities and City of London Police.</media:text>

Milly Dowler killer loses appeal bid

Former bouncer Levi Bellfield has lost a Court of Appeal bid to challenge his conviction for the kidnap and murder of teenager Milly Dowler.

Related Stories

No evidence over Milly leak

CCTV of tractor-driving thieves ram raiding bank

<media:category>UK</media:category><media:keywords>Levi Bellfield, Milly Dowler, murdered, Surrey, schoolgirl, Walton on Thames, appeal, leave to appeal</media:keywords><media:text>Former bouncer Levi Bellfield has lost a Court of Appeal bid to challenge his conviction for the kidnap and murder of teenager Milly Dowler. Bellfield was given a whole life term in June 2011 after being found guilty of abducting and killing the 13-year-old following a trial at the Old Bailey. The schoolgirl was snatched from the street while on her way from school to her home in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, in March 2002, Old Bailey jurors heard. Abu Qatada is due to be released on bail while appeals proceed on whether he can be deported to Jordan. He cannot currently be deported until assurances are received that any evidence used against him in a Jordanian court will not have been obtained by torture. Answering an urgent question in the Commons, Theresa May insisted the bail conditions would be very strict and the Government wanted to deport Qatada before the bail expired in three months. But Peter Bone, MP for Wellingborough, said: "We have a vicious, nasty terrorist. We have the Supreme Court who says send him home. We have a friendly Government. We have a gutsy Home Secretary. "You have listened to what Parliament has said today. You could become a national hero if you leave this chamber, pick up the phone and order him to be sent back to Jordan tonight."</media:text>

Met admits hacking failings

The Metropolitan Police Service has accepted that it acted unlawfully by failing to warn people that they had been victims of phone hacking.

<media:category>UK</media:category><media:text>The Metropolitan Police Service has accepted that it acted unlawfully by failing to warn people that they had been victims of phone hacking. A number of claimants have settled judicial review proceedings brought against the force. Former Deputy Prime Minister Lord Prescott, ex Met Deputy Assistant Commissioner Brian Paddick, actor Jude Law's personal assistant Ben Jackson, MP Chris Bryant and an anonymous individual known as HJK have reached agreement. In a declaration the Met admitted it had breached its duties under Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights. Lord Prescott, who was in court, said in a statement: "It's taken me 19 months to finally get justice. "Time and time again I was told by the Metropolitan Police that I had not been targeted by Rupert Murdoch's News of the World." He added: "But I refused to accept this was the case. Thanks to this judicial review, the Metropolitan Police has finally apologised for its failure to inform victims of the criminal acts committed by the News of the World against myself and hundreds of other victims of phone hacking." The Metropolitan Police Service released a statement that read: "The MPS is pleased to have reached an agreement in this case and accepts more should have been done by police in relation to those identified as victims and potential victims of phone hacking several years ago. "Today's settlement does not entail damages being paid by the MPS and, as the court has made clear, sets no precedent for the future."</media:text>

Redknapp jurors consider verdicts

The jury trying Harry Redknapp on tax evasion charges has retired to consider its verdicts.

Related Stories

Harry Redknapp proud of Spurs' Premier League performance

Harry Redknapp says Spurs will attack Man City

Manchester City 3 Tottenham 2

Balotelli charged with violent conduct

'Possibility' of football club buying 2012 Stadium

Related Stories

Tens of thousands protest in Moscow

Harry Redknapp cleared of tax evasion

Mandaric acquitted over tax charges

Harry Redknapp's conversation with NOTW reporter Rob Beasley

<media:category>UK</media:category><media:keywords>Harry Redknapp, Milan Mandaric, Harry, Redknapp, Mandaric, tax evasion, Poortsmouth, Tottenham, Spurs, tax, fraud, tax fraud</media:keywords><media:text>The jury trying Harry Redknapp on tax evasion charges has retired to consider its verdicts. Dickens was arguably the original rags to riches story, spending his pubescent years in working class London, and never forgetting his roots as he found fame as a writer. Many of his novels and short stories highlighted the plight of the poor in Victorian society and he is widely regarded today not just as a literary artist, but also a social commentator. His early years were spent in relative financial stability in Portsmouth and many biographies of the author suggest these were among his happiest years. The countryside setting later featured in many of his novels, but when the young Charles was ten, the Dickens family moved from Portsmouth to London, leaving him behind to finish the school term. When he was reunited with his family, he apparently found them living in poverty. The shame of this had a profound impact on Dickens, influencing at least some of his writing in later life. He worked in a blacking factory when he was 12 while his father was in prison because of his problems with debt, an experience that clearly stayed with him because he fictionalised the event in two of his most famous novels, Great Expectations and David Copperfield. Very few people knew details like this about Dickens until they came to light after his death. He was so popular and famous while he was alive, public knowledge of his poor background would not have done his image any good in Victorian Britain. Like many modern celebrities, he liked to keep his private life 'private'. Dickens first found fame with The Pickwick Papers, his debut novel, originally released in serial form. But another family tragedy coincided with this particularly productive time in his career. His sister in-law died very suddenly when she was just 17 years old. Soon afterwards, he wrote Oliver Twist, another piece of work that comments on social inequality in the 1800s. The life of Charles Dickens has fascinated many over the years. His work has been studied in schools and universities and turned into plays and TV and radio dramas, one of the most recent being a BBC adaptation of Great Expectations starring Gillian Anderson. There is even a word in general-use among the English-speaking public that describes his gritty, sometimes comically-evil characters and the poor social conditions that make up the backdrop for his stories: Dickensian. Charles Dickens died after suffering a stroke at the age of 58.</media:text>

Prince Charles leads Dickens celebrations

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall are leading celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens.

Related Stories

200 years of Dickens: The original rags to riches tale

<media:category>UK</media:category><media:keywords>Dickens, Charles Dickens, Charles, Prince Charles, Camilla, Great Expectations, Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey</media:keywords><media:text>The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall are leading celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens. Events are being held across the country including a wreath-laying ceremony at the his grave in Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey. The congregation will include the largest ever gathering of descendants of the writer as well as representatives from the worlds of literature, film, theatre and the media. Ralph Fiennes, who is starring in a new film of Great Expectations, will give a reading along with Mark Dickens, the novelist's great-great-grandson. The Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr John Hall, said: "Dickens' humanity and compassion made an extraordinary impact on Victorian England through his writings, which remain immensely popular. "This bicentenary should help renew our commitment to improving the lot of the disadvantaged of our own day." Before the ceremony, Charles and Camilla will visit the Charles Dickens Museum in Doughty Street in London, where they will be given a reading by Gillian Anderson, who played Miss Havisham in the recent TV adaptation of Great Expectations.</media:text>

Ian Paisley treated in intensive care

The Rev Ian Paisley is in intensive care after being admitted to hospital with heart problems.

<media:category>UK</media:category><media:keywords>The Rev Ian Paisley, Northern Ireland First Minister, minister, Stormont, Ulster Hospital, Dundonald, IRA</media:keywords><media:text>The Rev Ian Paisley is in intensive care after being admitted to hospital with heart problems. Mr Justice Mitting ruled the radical Muslim cleric, who is fighting deportation to Jordan, should be freed on bail at a hearing of the Special Immigration Appeals Commission. The conditions will be similar to those set in 2008, with Qatada confined to his home for all but two one-hour periods each day. He will also be allowed to take one of his children to school. Mr Justice Mitting said it would take "between a few days and about a week" for the Security Service to check the proposed bail address before Qatada can be released. He also ruled that the Home Secretary Theresa May has three months to show progress is being made in negotiations with Jordan or restrictions on Qatada's liberty may not be acceptable any longer. The man once described by a Spanish judge as "Osama bin Laden's right-hand man in Europe" is being held at Long Lartin high security prison in Worcestershire. Last month he won an appeal to the European Court of Human Rights, with the judges there ruling that sending him back to face terror charges without such assurances would deny him his right to a fair trial and be a "flagrant denial of justice".</media:text>

No evidence over Milly leak

The IPCC finds no evidence a Surrey police officer gave information to journalists during investigation into Milly Dowler's disappearance.

Related Stories

Milly Dowler killer loses appeal bid

<media:category>UK</media:category><media:keywords>Milly, Dowler, Amanda Dowler, Milly Dowler, IPCC, Independent Police Complaints Commission</media:keywords><media:text>The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) says it has found no evidence that a Surrey police officer gave information to journalists during the investigation into the disappearance of Milly Dowler in 2002. The matter was referred to the IPCC by Surrey Police last August after the force received information from three newspaper journalists that they were going to publish the allegations. Mike Franklin, IPCC Commissioner, said: "It appears from this investigation that unsubstantiated information, perhaps not surprisingly, quickly gained currency in a climate where the relationships between the police and the media are under intense public scrutiny. "A police officer was criminally interviewed and remained under suspicion for some months, as our investigators sought to establish the facts. We have provided Surrey Police with our report and indicated we see no need for further action."</media:text>

Capello could be in trouble over Terry comments

Fabio Capello could be in breach of contract after openly challenging the decision to strip John Terry of the England captaincy.

Related Stories

Sir Alex Ferguson on John Terry and Rio Ferdinand

Next England captain 'up in the air'

Chelsea want to forget John Terry and Anton Ferdinand row

Terry stripped of England captaincy

Gary Cahill unveiled by Chelsea

Related Stories

Next England captain 'up in the air'

Terry stripped of England captaincy

Harry Redknapp cleared of tax evasion

Capello quits England

<media:category>UK</media:category><media:keywords>England, Fabio Capello, Capello, Terry, John Terry, Chelsea, Euro, Euro 2012, FA, Football Association, David Davies</media:keywords><media:text>It is suggested that Fabio Capello could be in breach of contract after openly challenging the decision to strip John Terry of the England captaincy. The Italian spoke out in defence of the Chelsea star during an interview with Italian broadcaster Rai 1 on Sunday. He was not consulted before the Football Association made its move on Friday, and said he was "absolutely not" in agreement with the FA's decision. "I have spoken to the chairman and I have said that, in my opinion, one cannot be punished until it's official and the court - a non-sporting court, a civil court - has made a decision to decide if John Terry has done what he has been accused of." The FA acted once it was known Terry would not face trial over allegations he used racist language to QPR's Anton Ferdinand until after Euro 2012 in July, despite the player denying the charge. Former FA chief executive David Davies says Capello may have breached his contract and could face action over his comments. "You could have what some of the media are calling a morality circus while England are trying to win the second major tournament in football. "A contract may have been breached, there is strong leadership now at the FA from David Bernstein. Last week he wasn't slow to take things forward and he may not be slow to do so now."</media:text>

Heavy attack underway in Homs

At least 50 people are reported to have been killed in a bombardment by Syrian forces of Homs.

Related Stories

Over 200 feared dead in Syria clashes

Fury over Syria resolution veto

Syria issues 'general amnesty'

William Hague expresses disappointment with Syria

Syria's Assad vows to strike with an 'iron fist'

Related Stories

Five arrested after Syrian embassy storm

Tens of thousands protest in Moscow

<media:category>UK</media:category><media:keywords>Syria, Homs, Assad, President Assad, UN, veto, Russia, China, Syrian National Council</media:keywords><media:text>At least 50 people are reported to have been killed in a bombardment by Syrian forces of the city of Homs. The Syrian National Council said the casualties followed a sustained assault on several districts. The city has become a centre of armed opposition to the regime of President Bashar al-Assad. The opposition group's Catherine al-Talli said: "The tally that we have received from various activists in Homs since the shelling started at six this morning is 50, mostly civilians. "The regime is acting as if it were immune to international intervention and has a free hand to use violence against the people," she added. Arab TV stations broadcast live footage from Homs, with explosions heard and smoke seen rising from buildings. Activists say more than 200 people were killed on Friday night when tanks and artillery blasted the Khalidiya neighbourhood. It is the highest reported death toll in a single day since the uprising against Assad's rule began last March. On Sunday the United States promised harsher sanctions against Syria after Russia and China vetoed a draft UN resolution that would have backed an Arab plan urging Assad to step aside.</media:text>

Giants beat Patriots in Super Bowl

The New York Giants have won a nailbiting Super Bowl 21-17 against the New England Patriots.

Related Stories

Adam Sandler and Madonna at Super Bowl

Adam Sandler and Madonna at the Super Bowl

Related Stories

Madonna dazzles at the Super Bowl

<media:category>UK</media:category><media:keywords>Super Bowl, New England Patriots, Patriots, Giants, New York Giants, New York, New England, Eli Manning, Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis</media:keywords><media:text>The New York Giants have won a nailbiting Super Bowl 21-17 against the New England Patriots. Inspired by their quarterback Eli Manning, the stole victory with a last-minute touchdown from Ahmad Bradshaw. The victory at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis was a repeat of their last Super Bowl win against the Patriots four years ago. "The greatest feeling in professional sports is to win the Super Bowl," said New York's Tom Coughlin, who at 65 became the oldest coach to win a Super Bowl. "What a wonderful experience it was to see the team come together like they did." The Giants had looked to have no hope of even competing for the title after a four-game skid late on that put them in danger of missing the playoffs.
