A series of interviews with friends and associates painted a familiar picture of a technology visionary who intimidated associates and insisted on getting his way, but whose drive and vision inspired admiration. The FBI in 1991 began questioning Jobs and his associates as the increasingly high-profile CEO began to be considered as a candidate for sensitive, presidential appointments. Jobs himself admitted in a 1991 interview, days before his wedding, that he had experimented with hashish and LSD in his youth. According to the FBI, other interviewees called into question his personal integrity and said that he was difficult to work with - no surprise to those familiar with a life story that emerged over the decades of an intensely private individual. Yet the majority of those interviewed recommended Jobs as fit for government. "Several individuals questioned Mr. Jobs' honesty stating that Mr. Jobs will twist the truth and distort reality in order to achieve his goals," the FBI wrote. Jobs died in October after a struggle with pancreatic cancer.</media:text>

Deadly shelling attacks in Syria

Syrian forces bombarded opposition-held neighbourhoods of the city of Homs with rocket and mortar fire on Thursday, activists have said.

Related Stories

Heavy shelling continues in Syrian city of Homs

Over 200 feared dead in Syria clashes

William Hague expresses disappointment with Syria

Heavy attack underway in Homs

Syria's Assad vows to strike with an 'iron fist'

Related Stories

Assault on Homs resumes

Assad 'committed to ending violence in Syria'

Attacks in Homs resume after Russian talks

'Whale' floated up Thames to highlight extinction threat

FBI files reveal Steve Jobs secrets

<media:category>World</media:category><media:keywords>syria, deadly shelling attacks, Homs, Syrian city, activists, Arab League, UN, United Nations</media:keywords><media:text>Syrian forces bombarded opposition-held neighbourhoods of the city of Homs with rocket and mortar fire on Thursday, activists have said. The United Nations chief condemned the ferocity of the government assault on Homs, which is at the heart of a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad that broke out nearly a year ago. "I fear that the appalling brutality we are witnessing in Homs, with heavy weapons firing into civilian neighbourhoods, is a grim harbinger of things to come," UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said. Concern was growing over the plight of civilians, and the United States said it was considering ways to get food and medicine to them - a move that would deepen international involvement in a conflict. Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said before flying to Washington for talks on Syria that Turkey, which once saw Assad as an ally but now wants him out, could no longer stand by and watch. Foreign ministers of the Arab League, which the UN said was planning to revive an observer mission it suspended last month because of the violence, are due to meet in Cairo on Sunday.</media:text>

Explosions of lava spew from Italy's Mount Etna volcano

Red-hot explosions of lava have started spewing from Europe's only volcano, Mount Etna, on Thursday.

Related Stories

Explosions of lava spew from Italy's Mount Etna volcano

<media:category>World</media:category><media:keywords>Mount Etna, volcano, eruptions, lava, ash cloud, Catania, airport, closed, flights, cancelled.</media:keywords><media:text>Red-hot explosions of lava have started spewing from Europe's only volcano, Mount Etna, on Thursday. Wildlife campaign group WWF claims western gray populations levels have dropped to as low as 130 with 26 breeding females. Their key feeding ground in the Russian Far East is off the coast of Sakhalin Island. Two drilling platforms already exist here and there are plans for a third, even though it was not included in the drilling schemes original environmental assessment. WWF wants the European organisations lending money to the project to officially oppose the plans by Sakhalin Energy, because they fear a third platform could push the whales further towards extinction. To highlight the threat to the whales, WWF sailed an 11-metre western gray whale - made of bamboo, cane, willow, recycled mattress foam, wet tissue paper and paint and complete with barnacles made from cupcake cases - down the Thames.</media:text>

Endangered crocs released into the wild

A crocodile breeding centre in Nepal are celebrating after recently releasing 40 endangered crocs into the wild.

Related Stories

Crocodiles brush their teeth before release into wild

<media:category>World</media:category><media:keywords>crocodile, crocs, gharial, gharial crocodiles, endangered species, nature, funny animals, tooth, teeth, bush.</media:keywords><media:text>A crocodile breeding centre in Nepal is celebrating after recently releasing 40 endangered crocs into the wild. Around 64-years-ago, German student Hans Feldmeier was, like millions of others in the war-torn country, given a "care" aid package while he was at Rostock University. Overtime, the package's contents were eaten - but a tin of lard was left untouched and has since followed Hans through three house-moves and several decades. "It was the case that we thought, oh well we aren't so hungry just now and it might get worse. So we just kept it and kept it," he said. "But the tins were so pretty! We didn't want to get rid of them. Then of course at some point I was curious to see whether or not the stuff was still good or not," Mr Feldmeier added. Despite the ongoing debate over food use-by labels, the retired chemist sent the tin off to a lab to assess its edibility, and it was found to still be good. To celebrate, Mr Feldmeier and his wife decided to spread the paste onto dark rye bread, or pumpernickel, and sprinkle a bit of salt on it, before tucking in. The verdict? "It has quite a neutral taste. But it was good with the salt and pumpernickel. I can't say it's inedible. It's really ok," Feldmeier said.</media:text>

Obama fires marshmallow cannon at White House wall

Barack Obama is clearly "gunning" for re-election because he has been filmed firing a marshmallow gun at a White House wall.

Related Stories

Obama fires Extreme Marshmellow Cannon at White House wall

US President Barack Obama's virtual 'hangout'

Newt Gingrich wins South Carolina Republican primary

Related Stories

US President Barack Obama's virtual 'hangout'

New John F Kennedy tapes released

<media:category>World</media:category><media:keywords>us president, extreme marshing, marshmallow cannon, barack obama, white house, science fair</media:keywords><media:text>Barack Obama is clearly "gunning" for re-election because he has been filmed firing a marshmallow gun at a White House wall. According to activists, tanks moved closer to the Bab Amro district in the central Syrian city, which has been the target of the heaviest barrages by loyalist troops, who have killed at least 150 people in the last two days. "Electricity returned briefly and we were able to contact various neighbourhoods because activists there managed to recharge their phones. We counted 47 killed since midnight," activist Mohammad Hassan said by satellite phone. Hassan said the bombardment intensified in the early morning, concentrating on Bab Amro, al-Bayada, al-Khalidiya and Wadi al-Arab - Sunni Muslim neighbourhoods that have risen up against Assad's 11 year rule. "Mortar and rocket fires have subsided, but heavy machineguns and anti-aircraft guns are still strong ... tanks are in main thoroughfares in the city and appear poised to push deep into residential areas," he added. The attacks on Homs continued despite Russia winning a promise from Assad to bring an end to the bloodshed, while Western and Arab states acted to further isolate Assad following the onslaught on the city, one of the bloodiest of the 11-month uprising.</media:text>

Rick Santorum revives presidential hopes

Rick Santorum revived his presidential hopes with a surprise sweep of the three nominating contests in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri.

Related Stories

Newt Gingrich wins South Carolina Republican primary

Poll upset as Gingrich wins primary

Mitt Romney takes Nevada

Related Stories

Tens of thousands protest in Moscow

<media:category>World</media:category><media:keywords>Colorado, Minnesota, Missouri, Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich, president, presidential hopes</media:keywords><media:text>Former US senator Rick Santorum revived his presidential hopes on Tuesday with a surprise sweep of the three nominating contests in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri. In a blow to Mitt Romney, Santorum trounced the front-runner by 30 percentage points in Missouri, which despite being a non-binding primary, has symbolic value as a measure of support in a big Midwestern state. After big wins in Nevada and Florida in the previous week, Romney had done little campaigning in Minnesota and Missouri and had been expected to win easily in Colorado. Even though he still holds strong advantages in financing and organisation, his campaign will now have to refocus to fight back the challenge from the surging conservative Santorum. With eight contests to date in the Republican race - including the three on Tuesday - Santorum has now won in four states, Romney in three and former House of Representatives speaker Newt Gingrich in one.</media:text>

Argentina goes to UN over Falklands

Argentina will make a formal complaint to the UN after accusing Britain of "militarising" their long dispute over the Falkland Islands.

Related Stories

Cameron attacks Argentina

<media:category>World</media:category><media:keywords>Falkland Islands, Argentina, Britian, Prince William, President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, HMS Dauntless, conflict</media:keywords><media:text>Argentina is planning to make a formal complaint to the United Nations Security Council after accusing Britain of "militarising" the dispute over the Falkland Islands. President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner said the UK's decision to send one of its most modern warships, HMS Dauntless, and the Duke of Cambridge to the South Atlantic outpost posed a risk to "international security". A Foreign Office spokesman said: "The people of the Falkland Islands are British out of choice. They are free to determine their own future and there will be no negotiations with Argentina over sovereignty unless the islanders wish it." Argentina is continuing to demand that Britain gives up control of the disputed archipelago with tensions between the two countries growing in recent weeks. Speaking to an audience including Falkland war veterans and other politicians at Argentina's presidential residence last night, Ms Kirchner said: "I have instructed our chancellor to present formally to the Security Council of the United Nations and before the General Assembly of the United Nations this militarisation of the South Atlantic which implies a great risk for international security." Tensions between London and Buenos Aires have been rising in the run-up to the 30th anniversary of the war over the islands. Last week Prince William began a six-week posting in the region in his role as an RAF search and rescue pilot.</media:text>

Assad 'committed to ending violence in Syria'

Russian Foreign Minister says President Bashar al-Assad is ready to accept an expanded Arab League mission in Syria.

Related Stories

Assault on Homs resumes

William Hague expresses disappointment with Syria

Syria's Assad vows to strike with an 'iron fist'

Syria issues 'general amnesty'

US considers closing embassy in Syria

Related Stories

Heavy attack underway in Homs

Syrian attacks on Homs kills 50

Assault on Homs resumes

Attacks in Homs resume after Russian talks

Deadly shelling attacks in Syria

<media:category>World</media:category><media:keywords>Syria, Damascus, Assad, Homs, President Bashar al-Assad, Bashar al-Assad, Sergei Lavrov, Lavrov</media:keywords><media:text>Russian Foreign Minister says President Bashar al-Assad is ready to accept an expanded Arab League mission in Syria and schedule a constitutional referendum. Following what he described as "very useful meetings", Sergei Lavrov insisted the president assured him he was "completely committed" to seeking an end to violence by all sides and was ready to seek dialogue with all political groups. He said: "The president of Syria assured us he was completely committed to the task of stopping violence regardless of where it may come from." Opposition groups have dismissed similar pledges in the past as Assad continued trying to eliminate unrest with tanks and troops and branded his adversaries "terrorists" and "armed gangs". Syrian forces resumed their heavy bombardment of the city of Homs, with activists and residents saying 95 civilians were killed on Monday. Russia and China vetoed a resolution in the UN Security Council that supported an Arab League call for the president to step down. Moscow said the draft would have put too little pressure on armed opponents of the government, which it says must share responsibility for nearly a year of bloodshed that has killed thousands of people.</media:text>

Assault on Homs resumes

Syrian forces have resumed their heavy bombardment of the city of Homs.

Related Stories

William Hague expresses disappointment with Syria

Syria issues 'general amnesty'

US considers closing embassy in Syria

Over 200 feared dead in Syria clashes

Five arrested after Syrian embassy storm

Related Stories

Heavy attack underway in Homs

Syrian attacks on Homs kills 50

Assad 'committed to ending violence in Syria'

Attacks in Homs resume after Russian talks

Deadly shelling attacks in Syria

<media:category>World</media:category><media:keywords>Syria, Homs, Damascus, Moscow, Bab Amro, Assad, Bashar al-Assad, Sergei Lavrov, Lavrov</media:keywords><media:text>Syrian forces have resumed their heavy bombardment of the city of Homs. The opposition group said Syrian forces bombarded several districts of the city on Monday. The assault came a day after the United States promised harsher sanctions against Damascus following Russian and Chinese vetoes of a draft UN resolution that would have backed an Arab plan urging President Assad to step aside. An activist said forces loyal to the President were using multiple rocket launchers in the attack. More than 7000 people have been killed since the uprising began in March last year.</media:text>

Police chase runaway goat for hours

Police in Australia have spent hours trying to catch a runaway goat in the suburbs of Melbourne.

Related Stories

Goat chase: Australian police given the runaround by nanny

Related Stories

Lion escapes from cage and kills camel

<media:category>World</media:category><media:keywords>goat, nanny, run, police chase, animals, wildlife.</media:keywords><media:text>Police in Australia have spent hours trying to catch a runaway goat in the suburbs of Melbourne. The Syrian National Council said the casualties followed a sustained assault on several districts. The city has become a centre of armed opposition to the regime of President Bashar al-Assad. The opposition group's Catherine al-Talli said: "The tally that we have received from various activists in Homs since the shelling started at six this morning is 50, mostly civilians. "The regime is acting as if it were immune to international intervention and has a free hand to use violence against the people," she added. Arab TV stations broadcast live footage from Homs, with explosions heard and smoke seen rising from buildings. Activists say more than 200 people were killed on Friday night when tanks and artillery blasted the Khalidiya neighbourhood. It is the highest reported death toll in a single day since the uprising against Assad's rule began last March. Foreign Secretary William Hague accused the two countries of encouraging further bloodshed after what he called an "hour of shame" for the international organisation. Insisting that the motion contained no provisions for a "back door" regime toppling or military intervention, Mr Hague said he was outraged at the veto. "How many more need to die before Russia and China allow the UN Security Council to act?" Meanwhile, US ambassador to the UN Susan Rice said the United States was "disgusted" and that Russia's veto was even more shameful because is continues to supply weapons to Syria. Secretary general Ban Ki-moon said the vetoes were "a great disappointment to the people of Syria and the Middle East." The resolution would have given UN backing to an Arab League plan for President Bashar al-Assad to step down and hold elections. However, Russian delegates said that the plan amounted to taking sides in a civil war, and that, in its current form, the agreement was unacceptable. The collapse of the talks came just a few hours after reports emerged, alleging that the Syrian Army had shelled a residential district of the city of Homs, killing over 200 people. The attack sparked heated protests and occupations of Syrian embassies worldwide, with 22 people being arrested following a break-in of the embassy in London which saw two police officers injured. Around 6,000 people are believed to have died in the 11-month Syrian uprising.</media:text>

Tens of thousands protest in Moscow

Tens of thousands of Russian political activists have gathered in Moscow for a series of rallies ahead of next month's presidential poll.

Related Stories

William Hague expresses disappointment with Syria

William Hague welcomes Burma reform promises

Ed Miliband hits back at Len McCluskey

Scottish independence referendum question announced

Scottish independence question revealed

Related Stories

Fury over Syria resolution veto

Heavy attack underway in Homs

Assault on Homs resumes

Rick Santorum revives presidential hopes

<media:category>World</media:category><media:keywords>russia, Moscow, election, putin, united russia, poll, vote, president, duma, fraud, electioneering, protest, demonstration</media:keywords><media:text>Tens of thousands of Russian political activists have gathered in Moscow for a series of rallies ahead of next month's presidential elections. Supporters from both pro and anti-Putin groups were planning marches on February 4, in a show of solidarity and to campaign against alleged electoral fraud respectively. Police estimates put the number of anti-government protesters at around 85,000, despite blisteringly cold temperatures of -17C. It is not known how many are attending the pro-Putin rally, although the numbers are also thought to be in the mid-to-high tens of thousands. Most were wearing white ribbons or carrying white balloons, a symbol of the anti-corruption movement. Organisers say the latest round of protests are designed to keep up pressure on the State Duma to hold a re-run of the December election which saw Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's United Russia party maintain a slim grip on power. The election, however, came amid claims of widespread electoral fraud, unfair electioneering, and ballot stuffing. Left Front opposition party leader and protest organiser Sergei Udaltsov told reporters: "So far those in power have not heard our demands. "So far no kind of reform is happening, and in March, they are hoping again to hold an un-clean, un-free, un-transparent election." All political parties deny any involvement in, or condoning of, electoral fraud.</media:text>

Over 200 feared dead in Syria clashes

Syrian campaigners claim more than 200 people have been killed and hundreds wounded in an army bombardment on the city of Homs.

Related Stories

Syria issues 'general amnesty'

William Hague expresses disappointment with Syria

Five arrested after Syrian embassy storm

Protesters attack Syrian embassy in London

Syria's Assad vows to strike with an 'iron fist'

Related Stories

Assad 'committed to ending violence in Syria'

Attacks in Homs resume after Russian talks

'Whale' floated up Thames to highlight extinction threat

Deadly shelling attacks in Syria

FBI files reveal Steve Jobs secrets

<media:category>World</media:category><media:keywords>Syria, homs, assad, bashar, embassy, un, arab spring</media:keywords><media:text>Syrian campaigners and human rights groups claim more than 200 people have been killed and hundreds wounded in an army bombardment of residential Homs. On the evening of February 3, units loyal to President Bashar al-Assad are reported to have opened fire with artillery and mortars on restive neighbourhoods in the city's suburbs, with most of the fire being directed on the Khalidiya district. Amateur video posted online, which could not be verified, shows nearby mosques being transformed into makeshift hospitals where the wounded could receive basic care. Reports on the exact number of casualties vary from 217 to 260 - either would make the attack the most deadly in the 11 month uprising. At least 30 buildings are thought to have been totally destroyed, with many others damaged. In response, crowds of anti-Assad demonstrators gathered outside the Syrian embassies in Britain, Germany and the US, whilst in Cairo crowds stormed the building, smashing furniture. The clashes come as the UN seeks to vote on a draft resolution, which would endorse an Arab League plan for President Bashar al-Assad to resign.</media:text>

FBI investigate hacked call leaked online

The FBI has confirmed they are investigating a hacked phone call which has been leaked online.

<media:category>World</media:category><media:text>The FBI has confirmed they are investigating a hacked phone call which has been leaked online. The statement comes after the hacking network Anonymous admitted releasing a recording of a conference call between the FBI and UK police. In the call the officers discuss their work against hacking, but also touch on more lighthearted conversation, such as the McDonald's in the Pentagon and refer to Sheffield as "not exactly the jewel in England's crown". The British police offers go on to confuse the city's shopping centre with Birmingham's Bullring. Relations seemed jovial, with a lot of mirth being shared between the two countries' law enforcement officers. More serious topics were covered, such as the two British men, Ryan Cleary and Jake Davis, who are wanted in the US for their alleged connections to Anonymous. According to Anonymous the 17-minute phone call took place on January 17 and it has not been made clear how the group obtained the recording. A New Scotland Yard spokesperson said; "We are aware of the video which relates to an FBI conference call involving a PCeU representative. The matter is being investigated by the FBI. At this stage no operational risks to the MPS have been identified; however we continue to carry out a full assessment." The FBI sate: "The information was intended for law enforcement officers only and was illegally obtained. A criminal investigation is under way to identify and hold accountable those responsible."</media:text>

Lobster-sized prawn found in New Zealand

Researchers in New Zealand havebeen left shocked at the discovery of a 30cm long prawn in a trench 4.3 miles under the sea.

Related Stories

Lobster-sized giant prawn found in New Zealand

<media:category>World</media:category><media:keywords>New Zealand, Kermadic Trench, prawn, giant, water and atmospheric research, curry.</media:keywords><media:text>Researchers in New Zealand have been left shocked at the discovery of a giant prawn in a trench 4.3 miles underwater. Scientists at the New Zealand Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (IWAR) on board the RV Kaharoa discovered the 30cm creature, believed to be related to the land-based sandhopper, deep in the Kermadic Trench. Ashely Rowden from IWAR, said he was thrilled at the discovery. "It's always great to be on a ship, where something unusual comes up on the deck and when there's just that little moment, it only lasts a mircosecond when everyone looks at one another and you know that you've got something special," he said. Many mysteries remain surrounding the creature; whether it is a new species, how it survives on the diet to be found at the bottom of the ocean, and how populous it may be. "Supergiant amphipods" have been found just once before, in the 1980s.</media:text>

First video of dark side of the Moon released

Footage filmed by the spacecraft Grail of the dark side of the Moon has been released by Nasa.

Related Stories

First ever video of dark side of the Moon released by Nasa

Russian Phobos-Grunt spacecraft to hit Earth within a week

Massive solar storm to hit Earth

Impressive high-resolution image of the Moon captured

Related Stories

Police camera captures 'meteor' crashing to Earth

<media:category>World</media:category><media:keywords>moon, space, universe, nasa, grail, earth.</media:keywords><media:text>Footage filmed by the spacecraft Grail of the dark side of the Moon has been released by Nasa. The clashes erupted near the University of Santiago, as a water cannon and tear gas were used to control demonstrators. Public transport in the area was shut down due to the violence. Since March last year, students held more than 6,000 protests in an attempt to achieve education reform. Students say the education system is profit-driven and provides poor instruction. Talks with the government have so far failed to bridge the divide.</media:text>
