
Despite hipsterish trappings - shameless targeting of the Skins generation; Erol Alkan as their producer - Castle Donington quartet Late Of The Pier have transcended the suspicion that they might be a new-rave band with a debut album that is, to put it mildly, really bloody odd.
The curiously named Fantasy Black Channel offers up an ADHD collection of oddities and experiments, loosely bound together by a robust coating of synths that veer between an approximation of 21st-century electro and a damn good Gary Numan impression. It works really well, though it's anyone's guess why; it's probably something to do with the sheer chutzpah with which they hurl themselves into tunes as illogical as Space And The Woods, which starts as an upbeat rant about suicide and ends as a downbeat tune about dancing.
It's not so much 12 songs as one huge tapestry of ideas, arbitrarily divided 12 times. But they're all good ideas and the chaos doesn't feel cluttered but full of life - an explosion of creativity and possibility.
