The world's oldest mum on sleepless nights, hourly feeds and nappy changes

The world's oldest mum poses with her newborn twins yesterday - and doesn't she look thrilled.

Perhaps frail 70-year-old Omkari Panwar is beginning to think she might just be a little bit long in the tooth for the endless wailing, nappy changing and sleepless nights. Still, she'll probably cheer up a bit once she gets them home.

Omkari already has two grown up daughters and five grandchildren. And despite the glum face she said she was delighted with her new boy and girl. She added: "I am so happy - they are both beautiful."

The babies were delivered by emergency caesarean after complications with the pregnancy. Omkari said: "After all I went through to have these babies it makes me weep just to see them."

Her 77-year-old hubby Charan had paid for IVF treatment because they were desperate for a male heir to take over their smallholding in Doghat, Uttar Pradesh.

The treatment costs £4,375 - a small fortune in India. To pay for it Charan mortgaged his land, sold his buffalo, spent his life savings and took out a loan. No wonder no one's smiling.
