Reading chairman John Madejski is happy he stuck with Steve Coppell

Reading chairman John Madejski insists he would have been 'a lunatic' to sack Steve Coppell during the club's nightmare run of eight straight defeats.

Saturday's 2-1 win for the Royals over Birmingham was their third in the last four matches. And Madejski believes the run is proof that he was right not to follow the example of other club supremos with more itchy trigger fingers.

He said: "Even when we went through that glitch of eight league defeats on the spin, nobody ever questioned Steve's ability as a manager.

"It would have been complete lunacy to even consider changing the manager. Changing managers is not necessarily the answer to anything.

"You've got to stick with him. It's not as if we were losing by a mile the whole time. It was just the odd goal here and there.

"I was totally happy with the manager and, hopefully, we've been proved right, which is great."

Saturday's win takes Reading five points clear of the relegation zone with Blackburn the next visitors to the Madejski Stadium on Saturday.

The club chairman added: "As I keep repeating, no one has ever questioned Steve Coppell's credentials or, indeed, his tactics. What we are seeing now is the upward swing of something that inevitably happens in football throughout a season.

"This was a crucial win for us, a six-pointer and absolutely what we needed.

"We have all had a fantastic Easter on the strength of it."

Meanwhile, Royals leftback Nicky Shorey insists he is more worried about keeping his club in the Premier League than getting his England place back.

The defender has not been selected for any of new boss Fabio Capello's England squads so far after featuring for Steve McClaren.

Shorey admitted: "Of course, you're always disappointed, but not majorly. At this moment in time, I've got bigger concerns in trying to stay in this division with Reading.

"It's an honour to represent your country and hopefully I'll do it again in the future.

MAD AXED MEN

Neil McDonald (Carlisle, Aug 13, 2007): Given the boot after just one game of the season.

Martin Allen (Leicester, Aug 29, 2007): Axed by Milan Mandric three months after moving to City on a three-year deal.

Jose Mourinho (Chelsea, Sept 20, 2007): A first title in 50 years, a successful defence of it and the FA Cup and League Cup were not enough.

Billy Davies (Derby, Nov 26, 2007): His big mistake was taking Derby up too soon. He paid the price for a team unable to compete.
