DAVID JAMES
Conceded a silly penalty just when England were in control of the game. Misjudged Anelka's run and could have earned a red card too.
5/10
WES BROWN
Does not look like an international full-back. Was clumsy in possession, looked vulnerable and did not offer enough going forward.
4/10
ASHLEY COLE
Made some good attacking runs and caused France problems with his crosses, one nearly leading to a first goal for England.
7/10
RIO FERDINAND
England's latest captain got his big chance in Fabio Capello's own version of Pop Idol as he auditioned to be permanent skipper. Looked solid.
6/10
JOHN TERRY
Both centre-halves looked steady apart from when Anelka's pace undid the defence. It appears his place in the starting line-up is no longer assured.
6/10
DAVID BECKHAM
Booked on a night to forget on his 100th cap as a lack of top-class games took its toll. But after 100 caps, still deserves a special mark.

OWEN HARGREAVES
Looked off the pace as he showed the effects of not being a regular at Manchester United. Was caught in possession and gave the ball away.
4/10
GARETH BARRY
By his own recent high standards, was hugely disappointing. He was caught in possession, and his passing was frequently off.
5/10
WAYNE ROONEY
Looked lively in the first half - but was also hauled off at half time. His pace and movement had troubled France but Capello brought that to an end.
7/10
JOE COLE
Has been in sensational form for Chelsea and has looked the best English player in the Premier League recently. Lively but subbed at half time.
