Freelance sub-editor - Weekly News Publication - England

A weekly news publication covering a specialised sector of the energy industry is seeking a freelance sub-editor to work two days per week.

The work entails thorough editing of stories submitted by our small team of reporters, fact-checking, page layout, sourcing photos and proofreading.

The ability to lay out pages on InDesign is essential, as is a good mix of design and copy-editing skills.

Experience in an industry publication and especially an energy publication is preferred but not a prerequisite.

Working in our London offices is desired at first but not essential.

We would also need the sub-editor to occasionally liaise with printers.

Policy Network is looking for an experienced and dedicated commissioning editor to join its Westminster-based thinktank and political network

Policy Network is committed to challenging its UK and international network of senior political figures, leading academics and policy experts with critical thinking on the key political and economic questions of the age. This role will play a lead in commissioning, shaping and promoting Policy Network publications and online content.

The readership of the Policy Network website has grown exponentially in recent times with the success of its political observatory and monthly “State of the Left” report. The commissioning editor will take this development to the next stage and firmly establish Policy Network as a leading international forum for debate, ideas and challenging analysis.

The successful candidate will be plugged into both breaking political developments and big picture analyses of the countervailing forces shaping liberal democracies in the 21st century.

The role offers the opportunity to gain invaluable experience in leading high profile political interventions, as well as the opportunity to contribute to intellectual debates of critical importance to progressive politics in Britain and other European countries.

It also offers a platform on which to build a career defining network of contacts in journalism, politics and academia.

KEY RESPONSIBILITES:

Commissioning authors to write for Policy Network.
Formulating elaborate questions to commission research papers and opinion pieces.
Conceptualising agenda-setting online debates and essay series.
Preparing, writing, editing and uploading website content.
Strengthening Policy Network’s social media presence with sharp and incisive interventions.
Maintaining the website as a vibrant and engaging communications platform.
Editing, proof reading, formatting and subediting of publications, covering subject matters such as the future of the EU, centre-left party politics, populism and identity politics, political economy and social policy.
Drafting and disseminating Policy Network’s international newsletter.
Developing key journalism contacts and improving Policy Network’s profile in the media.
Developing and maintaining key contacts with partner organisations, researchers and other interested parties in the UK and abroad.
Contributing to the preparation and delivery of high-profile events and conferences.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

Degree level qualification in a political, social or economic science, media studies or other relevant academic qualification. Postgraduate degree(s) and/or research qualification is an advantage.
Several years work experience in politics or media or similar role in thinktanks, NGOs, governmental and European institutions.
Excellent knowledge of English, with an ability to understand and communicate a range of political ideas.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Proven experience of editing and/or writing creatively for a range of audiences.
Some experience in website management and knowledge of related applications and software would be an advantage.
Confidence and flexibility to work in a dynamic international research environment.
Very good understanding of UK, European and international politics. The candidate should be committed to the principles of centre-left politics.

With a varied workload that includes sub-editing, picture research, commissioning and writing, the successful applicant will support three small, busy teams in our Westminster offices.

We are about to re-launch into a highly competitive market and we’re looking for an enthusiastic, creative individual to work closely with the editor and editorial team through this exciting new stage in our development.

The ideal candidate will have solid training and experience in designing for magazines and be able to work from home. To join our close-knit, fun team you’ll need the following:

You must have:

Knowledge of Adobe In Design, Photoshop, Illustrator and Microsoft Word
Be super-organised, a self-starter and highly motivated
Have at least 4 years experience on magazines
Be at the same / a similar level now to senior designer or art editor
Have experience in packaging, PDFing and sending magazines to print
Be proficient in colour correction
