Why so bitter? Its Super Sunday Blues

coach
By Boris Mellor May 10 2008
Well several Grand Slam Sundays where all would be decided have been and gone, on the last day of the season nothing has been settled. This season could have an ending as dramatic as Arsenal's victory at Anfield in 1989, yet, no doubt, many Gooners don't give a shit. They are still hurting that their team that led for two thirds of the season suddenly faded away and dropped out of the race.

To make it worse on this most super of grand slam Sunday's we have a meaningless match; the points will make no difference to either team. Arsenal can't move up a place, and Sunderland are safe. Wenger will give his youth a chance, and Keane will give his underperformers, including Stokes, one more chance to convince him they are good enough to stay.

I remember some fans being gutted when Stokes left, not really proved Wenger wrong has he? But I digress, I don't want Arsenal to lose this meaningless match because Keane may gloat as if he has defeated our first eleven, and if he doesn't Sunderland fans will. With no Flamini, Fabregas, or Hleb it is hard to see Arsenal being that dynamic, but I will be happy to be proved wrong.

Why the bitterness?

So yes it's more Sunday blues than Super Sunday for Gooners, but for a few it is more than feeling hurt, there is a feeling of bitterness. Suddenly this has become one of the worst teams Wenger ever fielded. That can't really be true can it? I know stats are not always the full story but they are some kind of indicator. Eighty points is far better than the last two seasons, and we have in the past won the Premiership with less. The Invincibles won 26 games, this team 23, and when you take into account that the bulk of those wins occurred in the first two thirds of the season it's not a bad achievement.

Added to this is the fact that this team has only lost one game at home in two seasons, and this season is undefeated in all competitions, including matches against Milan and Manchester United. It has only scored fewer goals than Man Utd; it was vulnerability to the long ball that undermined it.

Disaster Predicted

At the beginning of the season most pundits, not all, predicted disaster for a post Henry Arsenal. Many, including a few Arsenal ones, told us that Spurs would push Arsenal out of the top four. Let's be honest most fans didn't expect to win the league, the more realistic scoffed at the Spurs theory, but only the tiniest of minorities predicted the Championship.

So if we look at all in perspective this has been a season where Arsenal overachieved in a context of the pundits predicting every week that Arsenal would implode. If you say something often enough you may eventually be right. When the implosion came it was caused by several events, but to my mind the Eduardo episode was probably the most important for two reasons. One the mental effect the shocking injury had on the team, and secondly the long term absence of RvP took its toll on Adebayor. Eduardo had begun to take the strain off Ade's shoulders at the right time, but that support was cruelly removed at a crucial time.

The rest doesn't bear thinking about, and doesn't need going over again and again. We could argue whether Arsenal were unlucky in the final important games, but only the criminally insane could argue we were lucky. If we had any luck in meaningful measure I certainly missed it. However that doesn't take away from the fact that it was lost at home against lesser clubs, we didn't lose at home, but there were three draws to many. Two or three less draws and it would be a three horse race on Sunday. So the margin of failure was very narrow, yes it hurts, but bitterness and blame doesn't help.

The better response is that we just missed it and that we could have done it, one more push and it can be done next season. Off course for the feint hearted that is not an attractive option, which is probably why Flamini is off, and Hleb wants to join him. No such luxury is open to fans, hopefully Wenger will strengthen the team, that some of the youngsters will step up; and that next season the rest of the team puts what it has learnt into practice.  Those players that have no stomach for the fight ahead should do us all a favour and piss off.

That is the worst part of arsenal season as that is the time journilsits put words inot our player's mouth, then things start to boil.

You will hear Cesc saying for now am Arsenal player after a quiz in this form:

"cesc, can you tell us where you will play in 20 years' time?" and Cesc will say, " I dont know by then but, now am playing for Arsenal"

By then Sun will put heading,: " CESC NOT SURE IF HE WILL STAY IN ARSENAL"

Spot on Padre, I can't believe some of the outpouring of woe and bile aimed at Wenger and the team for not winning the EPL and all this bull about the side lacking leadership compared to the invincables show alot of fans have short memories as the guys of 2004 fell apart in 2003 and in 2005

And when they fell apart in 2003 some claimed that Arsenal would never win the league again

2004/05?
Vieira was wanderlust on the ptich with his mind elsewhere.
Henry turned "sicknote" and even missed FA Cup FInal.
Bergy another "Sicknote".
Same as Pires, Freddy, plus Reyes was also injured.
Kolo was still grooving into his CB role, adn Sol was declining.
And goalie?

It was a team on the decline but the quality saw it being 2nd.

Like 2007/08 seaosn, after a scintillating start and at 49-0, went to pieces after Battle of Old Trafford..again they can't handled the hacking and kicking dished out to the team.

Saw the similarity?
After BRUM, the team went to pieces and never the same again...and promptly lsot to ManLeeds and Chelski.

2002/03 season?
Our November Blip and teams worked out tactics to get into our faces, hacked and kicked us out of the game.

2007/08?
We startup to those kickers and dished out our own kicking and hacking.
Mye xpectationw as 2nd place.
No big deal as thsi team still ahs the nUCLEUS to win the rpemiership next season.

Our superb passing game whcih created 10+ scoring chances, adn sometimes 20+ chances, will see us winning games if Van Persie is fit season long, Adebayor, bendtner, Walcott improves on thsis eason performance, Eduardo ready in Janaury 2009,...Vela, Fabregas, Rosicky all contributes double-digit figures in goals...

This team mentality si tougher than the French Spine as they won matches agaisnt kickers upNorth.

And Gallas did not rpovide the leadership when the chipsa re down, and my eprception si that the team somewhat is askign quesiton on Gallas' leadership quality.

Wenegr betetr sorted out thsi "Leadership" matter before start of pre-season.

*********SIGH***********beat ManLeeds, Chelski and Liverpool, the title is ours...

I am not bitter, as my expectation was 2nd spot.

Just hurting extremely badly.
That is all.

And we got to play 2 tuned-up competitive games prior to start of premiership.

has UEFA changed the rulign yet that we can't draw against "weak team" in CL qualifying rounds?

Really agree with the post on the whole, and especially the bit about slight margins.

P Team Pld W D L Pts GD
1 Arsenal 38 25 11 2 86 45
2 Chelsea 38 25 10 3 85 39
3 Man U 38 26 6 6 84 56

This is how the table should have looked. Not after major alterations in our season, but if we had kept our concentration for the last 35+ minutes of the game at Old Trafford where we played them off the park. Instead we conceeded two needless set-pieces. That's how close it was.

I know hindsight is always 20/20, and some will argue that if we had won, the other results may not have panned out they way they did, but that argument would also work in our favour, considering the morale boost a win over Utd would have given the lads. THAT"S how CLOSE it was!

Keep the faith Gooners!!
