Japanese government considers tax on iPods
Japan may impose an ‘iPod tax’, levying a charge to compensate copyright owners for notional piracy of their content.
The proposals will begin to go through the Japanese government this week. They demand a tax be levied on sales of iPods and other digital music players, as well as on digital hard disk recorders.
The amount of the fee hasn’t yet been decided, but is likely to be 100 yen (approximately $1) per device, generating an annual pot of 1 billion yen to be distributed among rightsholders, a report claims.
Japan already imposes a similar tax on devices including minidisk and DVD recorders, the report explains.
Similar proposals failed to become law in in December 2005 when a government committee failed to reach consensus agreement on the suggestion.
