Apple will support US military use of PA Semi processors, report claims
Apple will support existing customers of its newly-acquired PA Semi chip company, reports claim.
The deal to acquire the fabless semiconductor firm isn’t yet finalised, and Apple’s reassurance that it will support existing customers of the PowerPC-based chips may be designed to ensure the deal isn’t opposed by one of PA Semi’s biggest customers - the US military,
Apple purchased PA Semi for $287 million last month. Later reports revealed the US Defense Department was already a major customer of the company, and had the power to prevent the deal going ahead in order to secure its supplies in the interests of national security.
Perhaps to head off such opposition, Apple’s letting some PA Semi customers know that that the company’s existing dual-core processor will receive long-term support, while also letting customers know the company will cease developing PA Semi’s chip architecture (PWRficient). A team of former PA Semi staff will be put in place to handle such support requests.
