Elgato has introduced a free software update for its Turbo.264 device, introducing a solid range of new features to its hardware video encoder for Macs.

Because Turbo.264 is a hardware encoder, it frees up the processor for other tasks while video encoding is in progress. The device and software support the export command of most popular video applications: iMovie, QuickTime Pro, Final Cut Pro and EyeTV.

The update includes many new features for YouTube users as well as owners of Apple devices such as video-enabled iPods, the iPhone, and Apple TV. For example, the improved software lets Elgato Turbo.264 owning YouTube users convert video into a YouTube-friendly format, and will automatically upload the encoded clips to the video sharing service.

The update also introduces support for DVD chapter markers and now preserves Dolby Digital audio for playback on surround sound speakers connected to Apple TV. Finally, the software also offers support for QuickTime Broadcaster.

The software also provides numerous improvements and bug fixes: compatibility with iMovie projects, Freebox recordings and WMC media have all seen improvement.

Elgato’s Turbo.264 costs £69.95.
