Apple preparing to introduce MacBooks with LED screens
Apple’s preparing to make good on its promise that future Mac laptops will field LED screens.
DigiTimes claims the Cupertino, California company has contracted Kenmos Technology to provide LED screens for MacBooks. The company already provides such screens for the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air.
The news comes as increasing speculation suggests Apple’s planning to introduce new model MacBooks, perhaps as soon as next month.
These will offer better processors, and an improved aluminium chassis. A move to metal from plastic makes some sense, as many MacBook owners have complained at unexpected cracks in the body of their computers.
These principally appear at the front top of the computer, to either side of the trackpad. These cracks occur above the areas containing the hard drive and WiFi card, suggesting some problem with heat dissipation could be the cause. While Apple has issued no official statement on the matter, the company has been known to offer to replace the top plate on affected machines.
“Apple plans to reduce and eventually eliminate the use of mercury by transitioning to LED backlighting for all displays when technically and economically feasible,” Apple CEO Steve Jobs promised last year.
DigiTimes is claiming that all Mac laptops will ship with LED screens next year.
