Guy Ritchie To Direct Sgt. Rock?

If Joel Silver gets his way, and we reckon that probably happens quite a lot, he may well have found the man to direct his long-gestating adaptation of comic-book solider boy Sgt. Rock.

Having worked with Guy Ritchie on his upcoming RocknRolla, the uber producer believes Mr Madonna is the right man to make DC’s military man into a movie.

If Ritchie, who recently created his own comic book line with The Gamekeeper, manages to get the World War II-based hero’s movie off the ground it’ll be something of a major achievement as the idea has been rattling around in development hell for a number of years now.

In the late 1980s, Arnold Schwarzenegger was attached to the role (despite the incongruity of an Austrian actor playing an American G.I.) and screenplays were written by John Milius and David Peoples. When all that fell by the wayside, Joel Silver picked up the reigns with a John Cox screenplay but until now the project failed to move forward.

We reckon that Ritchie could well have the stones to pull this off. He’s adept at directing macho types and as long as he tones down the flashy Lock, Stock-style visuals he could well churn out a decent adaptation – just as long as he doesn’t cast Jason Statham as the eponymous infantryman, we love him but that boy just can't do an American accent.

RE:
Someone should ascertain wheteher Dan Henderson from Pride + UFC can act. He'd make a WELL good Sgt Rock. Dwain on the other hand, would not and I'm willing to bet my house Dan's a better actor than he is. ... Read More

oh... agreed on that Dwayne Johnson should be cast though. Especially since he realyl is the only actual Arnie replacement there is. (well... as much as anyone really CAN replace Arnie - maybe if Mariusz Puzianowski decides to take up acting. I'd say and not be crap, but... Hercules) ... Read More

Stath was doing an American accent in The One? wow... Johnny Ross isn't the worst person on the planet at accents then. as for casting Stath as Sgt. Rock... just make him English. They made Constantine a Yank, why not return the favour? Guy Ritchie directing a movie that isn't a 'Cockney' gangster movie however... does he even know that other types of movie exist? ... Read More
