Sydney come from behind to beat Roar in Cup

July 19, 2008

SYDNEY, July 19 (Pre-season Cup) - Sydney FC came from a goal down to beat 10-man Queensland Roar 2-1 in their opening match of the A-League Pre-season Cup on Saturday.

After a scoreless first half at Campbelltown Sports Stadium, Queensland opened the scoring four minutes after the interval when Dutch striker Sergio Van Dijk fired home from the edge of the box.

But Sydney quickly restored parity as teenager Chris Payne marked his debut with a close-range finish to make it 1-1.

Queensland were reduced to 10 men in the 57th minute when South Korean full-back Seo Hyuk-Su was dismissed for a challenge on Alex Brosque and from the resulting free-kick, Mitchell Prentice found the top right corner of the Roar net to secure victory for the home side.

The day's other game saw Perth Glory and reigning A-League champions Newcastle Jets play out a 1-1 draw at the Mandurah Stadium.

Perth took the lead when new signing Adrian Trinidad converted a 12th-minute penalty, but Noel Spencer levelled the score for the visitors nine minutes before half-time.
