America set up Sudamericana date with Deportivo

August 8, 2008

Colombia's America will face local rivals Deportivo Cali in the first stage of the Copa Sudamericana after recording a 4-2 victory against Venezuela's Maracaibo on Thursday.

Midfielder Victor Cortes scored twice, while Gustavo Ramos and Pablo Arango secured the win for the Cali-based team.

Dario Figueroa and Heiber Diaz netted the goals for the visitors, who played the entire second half with 10 men after Lainecker Zafra was sent-off.

Meanwhile, Chile's Universidad Catolica destroyed Uruguayans River Plate 4-0 to also advance to the first stage.

After losing 2-0 in the first leg last week in Montevideo, Fernando Carvalho's Universidad Catolica took advantage of several defensive mistakes to advance.

Julio Gutierrez, Marcos Gonzalez, Milovan Mirosevic and Luis Nunez scored for Universidad Catolica to set up a meeting with either Paraguay's Olimpia or Bolivian outfit Blooming.
