Mexes ban for Roma, Vieira boost for Inter

October 14, 2008

Roma defender Philippe Mexes has been banned for three games by the Italian football league for insulting the match official in a Serie A game at Siena.

The French international was ejected after being shown a second yellow card for dissent during Roma's 1-0 defeat on October 5.

The 26-year-old won't be available for the games against Internazionale, Udinese and Sampdoria but will return to action in time for the showdown in Turin against Juventus on November 1.

• Meanwhile, Internazionale coach Jose Mourinho received good news on Tuesday over the fitness of Patrick Vieira ahead of this weekend's clash with Roma.

The midfielder was forced to sit out France's World Cup qualifier at Romania last Saturday after sustaining a muscle injury prior to kick-off.

While he has a a minor problem with his right calf, tests done in Milan confirmed the damage is less serious than initially feared.

The France captain, who missed Euro 2008 with a thigh injury, will miss his national team's friendly with Tunisia on Tuesday but could recover in time for this weekend's Serie A showdown.
