Cristiano Ronaldo declared his affection for Manchester United after capping a magnificent season by helping the club win the Champions League.
However the Portugal winger continues to send out mixed messages about his
future.
Ronaldo, who scored his 42nd goal of the season in last night's dramatic win
over Chelsea in Moscow, is being constantly linked with a move to Real Madrid.
United maintain that he is going nowhere as he has the perfect platform to
showcase his talents.
But in radio interviews, Ronaldo said: 'I don't promise anything to anyone,
even my mum! I want to stay, of course, but no-one knows what will happen in the future.
'No-one has said anything to me, we will see in the next two weeks.'
Ronaldo certainly has the world at his feet and is in line to be named FIFA's
World Player of the Year after finishing third last time.
He puts his success down to the efforts of the coaching staff, led by manager
Sir Alex Ferguson, his team-mates and the environment in general.
He said: 'I love the people. The players are fantastic. The atmosphere at Old
Trafford is unbelievable. All the staff are great and I feel very happy in the club.
'I win trophies. The people are friendly, the support is amazing. Everything
is very good. The English people have been good to me since the World Cup in 2006 and I
love it.'
United have steadfastly insisted Ronaldo is going nowhere, but Real Madrid
president Ramon Calderon admits his club would be interested.
He claims the final decision will ultimately come down to the player.
'The players play where they want. If a player decides to leave he is
unstoppable, slavery was abolished a long time ago, nobody can prevent a player
from moving,' Calderon was quoted as telling Punto Radio.
'If the player is firm in his decision there is no one who can hold him
back.'
He added: 'I have always said that if Manchester want to sell him, we will
ask about him, and if he wants to come and we can pay what they ask.'
United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz, however, claims Ronaldo has no
intention of leaving.
'Without doubt he is going to continue in Manchester. He is very happy with
us, he has a contract and there is no fear that he will leave,' Queiroz, the
former Real Madrid coach, said on Canal Plus.
Ronaldo had a night of mixed emotions at the Luzhniki Stadium after making the
breakthrough with a powerful header in the 26th minute.
Frank Lampard pulled Chelsea level on the stroke of half-time and then Ronaldo
missed a penalty in the shoot-out.
However his agony turned to ecstasy when goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar made a
crucial save from Nicolas Anelka to seal a dramatic victory.
Ryan Giggs was particularly pleased for his young team-mate.
He said: 'Cristiano deserves to win the European Cup more than anyone,
considering what he has done for the club this season. He got another goal tonight and while he would have been disappointed at
missing the penalty, he got his reward.'
Ronaldo shrugged off his miss and focused on the bigger picture.
He said: 'I cannot do everything. I want to score every time but that is
impossible. I can get better. Goals are not the main thing. I might score 20 or 25 goals
next season but I might play better.
'All season I have improved and I want to improve again next season. Why talk about the miss. I have won the Champions League and I have the
medal around my neck.
'I was very happy when Edwin saved the penalty. I went a little bit from
despair to joy. Even after my miss I still believed all the time. I knew my colleagues would
do the right job.'
Ronaldo believes the future is bright as United's vibrant young side secured a
league and Champions League double.
He said: 'We have a great chance to do it again and all the lads believe
that. We have a good team and a good spirit.
'I have played with these lads for five years and to win the Premier League
and the Champions League is a great achievement.
'It is big for the club and the players. It is a young team and we have the
chance to win the Premier League and Champions League again next year.'
