Here we go again, as if I didn’t have enough on my plate it is time for the Arsenal Times End of Season Survey. No summer would be complete without my team of top trained statisticians and survey-ologists working feverishly around the clock in my garden shed in order to compile this, the most eagerly awaited and all encompassing survey in the modern game. Let’s see if we can get more entries than last year (it won’t be difficult), and please, when you put your answers down, try and be sober enough to make sure they make a BIT of sense, answers like ‘thingy’, ‘What’s his name’ ‘The Everton player’ ‘Can't remember’ will, regrettably be discounted.

In a week that Chelsea won the Champion’s League and Robin van Persie refused to sign a new contract there has been much soul searching amongst Arsenal fan’s. Yes Arsenal finished third but when and where is the next trophy coming from if the Gunner’s can’t afford to keep star players. Can Arsenal get quality players into the squad at affordable prices? January Transfer Window: As usual Arsenal fans were left less than excited by our transfer activity, apart from the clever stunt of loaning in Thierry Henry for a short stint, and the reserve signing of Eisfeld (another one for the future) nothing happened. It’s my understanding that we did try to sign Podolski in January, but once he made it clear he would not move mid season due to the Euro Championships, we then signed up TH12 on the short term deal. That was the extent of our dealings, despite Wenger stating that it would be unforgivable if we dropped points due to the lack of fullbacks in our squad (we failed to win any of our first four FAPL games of the New Year) so yes one more thing that Wenger should not be forgiven for.

As the whistle went a couple of thousand people stretched between the Royal Ok and Woolwich bars, at the Emirates roared in triumph. Wenger say’s third is a trophy, and certainly the diehards at the Hawthorns, and those in the Emirates, would agree with him. They then sang are you watching Tottenham, I hope they didn’t mean the match, just watching Arsenal fans gloating.

I’ll cut to the chase. I literally couldn’t believe what I was seeing hearing and reading on Saturday. The wailing and gnashing of teeth following our unfortunate draw with Norwich City, well, it was the sort of wailing and gnashing of teeth you’d expect to hear following a narrow last minute Cup Final defeat. People were literally devastated. And why? Because we might come 5th now, or 4th, instead of 3rd. Now, if I thought the source of their misery was the embarrassment of finishing behind Spurs, then I might be mildly sympathetic.

At the end of the game Arsenal began the lap of tears, the trudge of tragedy, the circle of gloom; or the lap of appreciation as Wenger prefers to call it, in front of less than a third of the once present crowd. The other two thirds quietly, without any protest melted away. The majority had preferred to flee rather than become involved in a civil war with their compatriots. The third that remained, including myself, cheered loudly and sang to RvP, I saw no point in demoralising the team further.

A draw at Stoke wasn’t a bad result, indeed an improvement on last few years, in which Arsenal have lost 3 out of 4 games. When Wigan beat Newcastle 4-0 it seemed like an even better result, so are Arsenal in the driving seat?Well Wenger said several games ago that every match was now a cup final, yet his team have managed two draws and a defeat since he said that. That is two points out of nine with only two games left Arsenal can get a maximum of 72 points. Those two games are Norwich at home and WBA away.

Only a fortnight ago Fortress Emirates was rocking, Arsenal were playing Man City with tempo and verve. The crowd were up for it with lots of witty songs and the culmination of a winning goal and the Poznan. Three days later and Wolves were vanquished 3-0 at a walking pace. Arsenal were cruising and third place looked like a nailed on certainty. Fans were happy and sleepwalking to Wenger’s greatest turnaround in his Arsenal career.

A victory in the last London derby for Arsenal will be an important step towards top four qualification. We are at present 4th in the Premier league form table, with 2 defeats and 7 wins in the last 9 games. Nonetheless, what should not be ignored are the last three games. We have managed to collect a mighty three points against the relegation fodder in the league.

The result like the weather was bitter and cold, Arsenal had failed to open an eight point lead over their rivals, but a large number of Arsenal fans remained behind after the final whistle to applaud the departing Wigan team. They were right to applaud, forget any stats you may have seen, this was an excellent performance by a team that only a few weeks ago was facing certain relegation.

An exaggeration, but he saved some embarrassment on saving a couple of very dangerous goal attempts, one of them a header that looked beyond him. If that header had gone in and it became 2-1 it could have got nervy. Szczesney deserves to be Man of the Match, he is developing into a match winner.

One the greatest thing about football is the spectators; they are spontaneous and can produce magic moments of humour. Banter at its best is not abusive, it is witty and ironic. For the last few seasons Citeh fans have sung at us that we will win nothing and more recently that van Persie is theirs, fair enough but hardly rib splittingly funny.

I can’t remember so many fans staying so late at a game, very few had left by the 99th minute when the game actually finished, and even then many still didn’t want to leave. They stayed to applaud the team off way beyond 10pm, and risked missing their trains to the eastern and northern counties.

I wasn’t supposed to be at the match I was meant to be at the O2 Arena watching my Nephew’s school choir. When I first realised it clashed with the 2nd Leg of the knockout round I was a bit peeved, but then we got beat 4-0 and I thought well it won’t be so bad. But as the day approached like all gullible fans I began to believe that perhaps a miracle could happen, and I wouldn’t be there.

Van Persie Man of the Match said that Arsenal didn’t deserve to win the game, there was a big truth in that, but the team which score the most goals wins, that’s the rules.

Nick Hornby at one point in his book ‘Fever Pitch’, lists the various factors that make for his perfect football match. Those of you who remember the passage will recall that he was rather demanding, he liked to have his pre match meal in a particular place, he liked a high scoring game with Arsenal winning by the odd goal, where the goal scorer celebrated the winning goal right in front of him. This was probably the worst ever defeat for Arsenal in the CL, its not a matter of the statistical enormity of the defeat, after all 8-0 wouldn’t have been unreasonable. No it’s not the matter of the margin of the defeat, but of the poverty of the performance. AC Milan played well, and they cut the Arsenal team apart again and again. Through the midfield like a knife through butter, and round the back of the defence like burglar bill.

Following the 8 – 2 defeat by Manchester United, Arsenal were unusually active on the last few days of the August transfer window (despite Monsieur Wenger’s continuing with his existing plans to attend a training course abroad on the last day). Though the acquisitions were less expensive than some other signings during Monsieur Wenger’s second period, this was something of a departure from the norm and there was also a move to remedy longstanding problems of inexperience.
